ABOUT

Mythos Jewelry was started in 2024 and takes inspiration from the world of mythology and literature. I have always been a fan of history and fantasy, often reading books and watching movies that blended the two. Incorporating those stories and symbolism into each design, I wanted to provide pieces that carried a little magic for the wearer wherever they went.

  • What is "gold-filled" jewelry and how does it differ from gold-plated jewelry?

The process of making gold-filled jewelry is quite different from gold plating. It includes pressure-bonding layers of gold over a base metal. All gold-filled pieces must legally contain a minimum of 5% gold by weight versus the much smaller .04% often found in gold-plated jewelry. This means the jewelry is thicker than plated pieces and less prone to tarnishing while still providing an affordable alternative to pure gold.

I specifically choose gold-filled chains on all my necklaces because of their resistance to tarnishing, especially from sweat and the daily friction of being worn.

To keep your gold-filled pieces looking their best, I would avoid spraying alcohol products directly on your jewelry (perfume/cologne or skincare products), rinse your jewelry if you've been swimming in salt water, and I recommend avoiding contact with chlorine to keep your pieces looking their best. A regular cleaning can also go a long way to preserving your jewelry.

  • How should I maintain my gold-plated pieces to keep them looking good for longer?

Though gold-plated is prone to tarnishing much quicker, you can prolong the look of your jewelry. Avoiding contact with water such as bathing or swimming, avoiding direct contact with chemicals like chlorine and alcohol, cleaning them gently after use (avoid harsh soaps), and storing the pieces in a dry area. I also recommend a jewelry box with sections so your pieces are not tangled and rubbing against each other.

With these simple care tips, your jewelry (whether filled or plated) will be around longer for you to enjoy.
